DVI knows how rewarding volunteering in our program can be. No job is too big or too small for our committed shelter volunteers. You can be a part of our program in one of two ways: service volunteer or hotline volunteer.
Service volunteers need no special training except for commitment to the goals of DVI and a sincere respect for the confidentiality of the victims we serve. As a service volunteer, you can help in a variety of ways: cleaning and maintaining the building and grounds, planting and/or tending our garden, helping to sort and organize our donations, working in our bingo program, preparing mailings, and other tasks where we can always use a pair (or ten) extra hands.
A hotline volunteer acts as part of the First Response Team (FRT) and advocate within shelter. They answer hotline calls, counsel and assist residents, provide referrals and assist in shelter operations. To be a hotline volunteer, a person has to complete 45 hours of domestic violence training which includs 10 hours of supervised practical application of skills. Shelter volunteers are also required to provide Pennsylvania Act 33 and Act 34 clearances prior to acceptance into the training program.
